How often should clients train their pelvic floor to improve stress urinary incontinence?
A systematic Review and Meta Analysis in 2019 reviwed many reserches which looked into the effectiveness of pelvic floor training of protocols to decrease urinary incontinence.
It has been shown that “Pelvic floor muscle training may be an effective therapy for reducing urine loss in women with stress urinary incontinence.
In addition, the results suggest that pelvic floor muscle training using short sessions (10–45 min) and with a frequency of 3 and 7 days per week might evoke the greatest changes in women with urinary incontinence.”
The study also found “Women who trained for a longer period of time (>12 weeks or ≥24 sessions) with shorter sessions (10–45 min) tend to achieve a greater decrease in urine loss.”
Key takeaways…
• Training the pelvic floor at least 3 times a week is optimal.
• Shorter training sessions (10–45 min) over a longer period of time (12 weeks) is ideal for improving pelvic floor function.
• Understanding your client’s weekly schedule so they can realistically train their pelvic floor multiple times a week is essential for programme adherence.
